The world around us is changing drastically, as the COVID-19 pandemic response alters every aspect of daily life. At Functional Self we are working hard to deliver you the best health-optimisation products available, including key supplements that help with immune support.

Among the most important nutrients for immune health are Vitamin C, Vitamin D and Zinc. We wrote about these nutrients and how they support immune function in our February Coronavirus blog.

This blog features advanced immunity boosters, including medicinal mushrooms, powerful antioxidants, probiotics and rare fats such as "alkylglycerols" - all of which have also been shown to strengthen immune health. We wanted to bring you very best biohacking and health optimising immune support products to help you mitigate the risk of COVID-19.

2. Carbon60: Natural and powerful antioxidant for immune support

Carbon60 is a powerful antioxidant which is 270 times stronger than Vitamin C, making it a potent immune-support supplement. It is an extremely small molecule and is made up of 60 carbon atoms in a cage-like sphere shape, not dissimilar to a soccer ball. This makes it easy to absorb and highly bioavailable.

Also referred to as C60 fullerenes, this molecule has great potential for improving health and wellbeing because of its powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Preventing oxidative damage is hugely beneficial for immune function as well as healthy ageing, making C60 an important product for optimum health and longevity.

Carbon60 from C360Health has been endorsed by prominent biohackers including Dave Asprey and Ben Greenfield, because of its potential to reduce inflammation, fight oxidative damage and improve healthspan. What makes the C360 Health range different is that the C60 is created via a patented process to assure maximum purity and yield.

As well as being one of the safest and most potent anti-inflammatory compounds for immune support, Carbon 60 is also popular for pets. This follows a number of studies on dogs and other mammals, showing regular use may lead to a dramatic improvement in inflammatory diseases[1]. Shop our Carbon60 range here.

3. GutPro: Premium probiotic for optimum immune health

Probiotics can help to re-colonise the gut by introducing microbial strains that are known to have a positive effect on our health. There are studies showing that even when in transit, probiotics can have a positive impact on gene expression and immune regulation.

The mechanism behind this may be related to the way that probiotics enhance innate immunity, including from viral infections. One study showed that specific probiotic strains upregulated genes related to viral defense [2], while a separate animal study showed strains that protected against viral pneumonias and reduced recovery times[3]. While it is important to note that much of this research has taken place on animals, researchers believe that specific probiotics can help to prime the mucosa of the lungs and reduce inflammation in the respiratory system.

Our preferred probiotic is GutPro from Organic 3. GutPro is an ultra-clean probiotic with 8 strains of beneficial bacteria, including those that have been shown in the research to provide a healthy gut and immune system.  You can learn more about GutPro here, or check out our full range of blogs about how to optimise your Gut Health

4. Ratfish Liver Oil: With immune stimulating Alkylglycerols

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil (RLO) has remarkable anti-inflammatory qualities. It contains “Alkylglycerols” (AKG) which are naturally-occurring ether-lipids that have been shown to stimulate the immune system. AKG are a unique fatty nutrient found in potent levels in certain marine species, notably ratfish liver oil. There are multiple studies showing that AKG upregulates your immune system, and it is currently being investigated for its ability to prevent and inhibit the development of certain cancers (including breast cancer, prostate cancer and brain cancers).

Rosita Ratfish Liver Oil is a good source of a wide range of essential fatty acids. It contains omega-3, omega-4, omega-6, omega-7, omega-9 and omega-11 fatty acids in their naturally occurring forms as well as a naturally low ratio of vitamin A to vitamin D. RLO also contains natural antioxidants such as squalene that protect cells against free radical damage.

5. Glutathione:  One of the body’s most powerful detoxifiers

Glutathione is a natural antioxidant that we produce in our cells. It can support healthy immune function and neutralise a broad spectrum of harmful substances and free radicals. As a master detoxifier, glutathione can bind to many unwanted compounds and help remove them from the body. This helps to protect our cells from damage and can improve metabolic energy. Glutathione is best taken in a liposomal form, as this helps to deliver the core ingredients faster and more efficiently. Shop the range here.
